The Military Thread

Here is a short list of places that offer military discounts. Please call your local vendors to be sure they participate in the program. Also, never be afraid to ask a store if they offer a discount, even if one is not advertised. You may be pleasantly surprised. Even, if you are out of the military, if you have a veterans I.D card that may be acceptable too.

Help for Military People Overseas

Did you know that the military people that are stationed overseas can use coupons over there for 6 months after they expire over here?....I didn't but I found an article in the newspaper telling about it. I guess because it takes so long for mail to get to them and they don't really have a source for coupons, the commissaries are letting them use any coupons they get up to six months past the expiration date. So now when your coupons expire you won't have to toss them...you can send them to our heroes to use!!!!!.............rockin  clapping

Many overseas military bases have stores that accept expired grocery coupons from the US (up to 6 months after their expiration date). You can help military families save money by sending your expired coupons to them. These are some contacts for military bases who distribute coupons to families:

Hey thanks. What a great idea. I use tons of coupons here at our commissary and I save a bunch of money. Here on base they are strict about coupons and dates, but now I will send the extras & expired ones over.:heartssmiley:

Mardi Gras in Iraq!

Check out this web site for a taste of Mardi Gras National Guard Style! I'm so glad to see our folks in the military enjoying a little "back home fun". The multi-colored costumes, with the cone hats and dark masks, are the traditional outfits of the Mardi Gras revelers. In the rural areas, revelers ride horseback or on wagons, through the countryside, and, going from house to house, and gather the ingredients for a gumbo. Everyone knows that they are coming and will have a chicken (live or from the store), green onions, parsley, flour and oil (for the roux), sausage, or rice. At the end of the "gumbo run" everyone gathers and the fun begins! There's food, drinks, and a fais do do, (pronounced fay - doe - doe) where everyone, young and old, dances to live cajun and zydeco music. The song playing in the background is about Mamou, LA. This little bitty town comes to life on Mardi Gras Day. The most famous place in Mamou, is Fred's Lounge. Fred's is a hole in the wall, but they have the best music and the coldest beer. It's a big change compared to New Orleans festivities, but a blast none the less.
