Pastas Not The Problem

>* Walk Off WeightLow-carb dieters, rejoice! A half-cup of fettuccini won't blow your carefully calibrated blood-sugar levels, nutrition experts say.

That's because pasta is made from durum wheat, which your body digests more slowly than it does similar "white" flours. (Of course, you still need other whole grain foods for the phytonutrients that only they can provide.)

For proof, check out how pasta fares on the glycemic index, a ranking of how quickly foods release glucose into your bloodstream. (Learn the rankings of all your favorite foods in our Pocket Guide to the Glycemic Index.)

Stable blood-sugar levels are thought to help control your appetite and may lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Use this rule to figure out if your food is too full of carbs: Foods under 55 hold blood sugar steady.

I love pasta...I don't think I could cut it out of our menu completely. I would miss it too much and it is very easy on the budget. I think portion size is more of an enemy than the actual food itself. I am guilty of overeating something that I really love...I think most people are. I read an article once about food addiction. Some people medicate with food etc. It is supposed to be one of the worst addictions to overcome. Because you can't stop eating. Alcoholics can give up drinking totally...so can drug addicts. Food addicts have to learn to control the addiction more than that because you can't totally give it up, so you are way more tempted. :)
