Default Ted Koppel's Son Died from Drugs and Alcohol

The son of TV newsman Ted Koppel died from a lethal dose of alcohol and illegal and prescription drugs. His death was ruled an accident.

Andrew Koppel, 40, who was found dead June 1 in a New York apartment, died from acute intoxication due to the combined effects of alcohol, heroin, cocaine diazepam (the generic form of Valium) and Levamisole (a substance used to cut other drugs), the New York City Medical Examiner office's said Friday.

Koppel, who lived in Queens with his girlfriend and baby daughter, began a drinking binge around noon on May 31 at a bar in Hell's Kitchen where he befriended Russell Wimberly, a 32-year-old waiter, according to reports.

The two drank all day and arrived together at Wimberly's friend's Washington Heights apartment late in the evening. "[Andrew] wasn't even really walking. He wasn't making sense," the friend, Belinda Caban, told PEOPLE.

A few hours after putting him to bed, Wimberly and Caban discovered Koppel wasn't breathing and called 911.

Andrew was the third of Ted Koppel's four children with wife Grace Anne.
