My grandmother still cooked over a fire or on the hearth as few as 50 or so years ago. She got her first oven in 1949. They didn't have an indoor bathroom until 1950. We still used an outhouse during the summer when the well ran dry and I remember her washing clothes in a black iron over a fire in the back yard and it was my job to run them through the wringer. She had a washer, but it stayed in the backyard. Only the most delicate of the clothes were washed in it. It chugged and jumped around and it had a ringer on it. As the close came out of the ringer, it landed on a corrugated deck. It was a big deal when we started going to the laundry mat!
