Default Kidney Awareness Month

March is "National Kidney Awareness Month." "This is an effort to stop kidney disease from killing and reduce the high demand for kidney transplants."

In Oklahoma alone, over 2,700 Oklahomans received dialysis treatment at a cost of more than $60,000 each. In 2005, 120 kidney transplants were performed in Oklahoma, and in 2006, over 600 Oklahomans waited for kidney transplants, but less than 250 received one. We need to inform people of the risk of kidney disease and of the tests and treatments available.

Three simple tests are available: Urine analysis, blood pressure, and serum creatinine can determine whether or not a patient has chronic kidney disease.

With one in nine Americans suffering from a kidney-related disorder and an additional 20 million facing increased risk, chronic kidney disease (CKD) ranks among the most common ailments in the country.

By eating healthy, drinking water and taking these tests annually, you can reduce the chances of getting kidney disease and save your life.
