Hungry Girl's Favorite Emergency Snacks (and Awesome Alternatives!)
They've got protein, nutrients, and that good-for-you fat, BUT since the calories can rack up quickly, we like our almonds portion-controlled. Blue Diamond's 100-calorie packs
are perfect. Excellent for an energy boost and they're so delicious, they don't need salt.
Alternative: Soy nuts. Try Crum Creek
's slightly salted Soy Nuts or Brilliantly Blended Soy Nut Mix (with chocolate chips, raisins, and more). Both in single-serving packs. Mmmmm!
We're suckers for protein, and jerky has the added bonus of being low in fat and calories. (Jack Link's Turkey Jerky has 80 calories and 0.5g fat per serving.) Plus it's delicious and won't get crushed in your purse or briefcase. Jerky isn't nearly as popular as it should be. And we're trying to change that ASAP!
Alternative: Meatless jerky. Primal Spirit Foods
makes a bunch of REALLY good ones. (The Teriyaki is fantastic!)
One of the easiest ways to get fiber into your diet. Apples are also cheap, abundant, and naturally portion-controlled. P.S. Our favorite kind is Fuji. And no, caramel apples don't count.
Alternative: Pears. If you get appled-out, they're a good alternative. They too are packed with fiber, have a bunch of vitamin C, and are DELICIOUS.
Light String Cheese
Once again, hooray for protein! Low-fat dairy is a terrific addition to your diet, and this is the easiest way to carry it around. Plus, a little extra calcium in your life can't hurt. Heads up! This IS cheese, so it won't last forever in your purse. Consume unrefrigerated string cheese within a few hours.
Alternative: Low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese cups. If your office has a fridge, you might want to stash some of these for your next snack attack.
Sometimes we need chocolate, and there's just NOTHING we can do about it... aside from eating chocolate. When you need a fix, grab one of these muffin tops. They're high in fiber, low in fat and calories, and EXTREMELY satisfying. Our favorite is the Triple Chocolate Chunk
. Psssst... there are non-chocolatey flavors as well.
Alternative: If you can find a muffin-type treat with stats this amazing that tastes even NEARLY as good, PLEASE tell us what it is.
When the junk-food cravings hit, sometimes the only weapon is portion control. If you need something specific (cookies, Cheetos, etc.) and don't want to overdo it, stick to 100-calorie servings. It's probably a good idea to have other nutritious snacks on hand as well, though.
