In light of the BP oil disaster, President Obama called for a timeout on new offshore drilling -- but he didn't include America's Arctic. In less than 60 days, Shell Oil is slated to begin exploratory drilling -- the riskiest kind -- in America's fragile Arctic Ocean. If this national crisis has taught us one thing, it's this: Drilling is a dirty and dangerous business. It was not safe in the Gulf of Mexico and it is certainly not safe amid the treacherous swells and sea ice of America's Arctic Ocean, where help is thousands of miles away.

If oil companies can't stop a spill in the Gulf of Mexico, how will they ever stop one at the top of the world? Tell Secretary Salazar to put a halt on Arctic Ocean drilling this summer!

As the predictions for the aftermath of the Gulf Coast spill grow bleaker, it is imperative that plans to drill on the Arctic Coast be halted immediately in order to avoid another catastrophic oil disaster in the isolated and fragile Arctic Ocean ecosystem.

Please consider asking Interior Secretary Salazar to put a halt to Arctic Ocean drilling this summer.

Just slightly ludicrous in light of the following April 1st release:

WASHINGTON -- Shaking up energy policy and his own environmental backers, President Obama threw open a huge swath of East Coast waters and other areas in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska to drilling Wednesday.

Obama's move allows drilling from Delaware to central Florida, plus the northern waters of Alaska, and exploration could begin 50 miles off the coast of Virginia by 2012. He also wants Congress to lift a drilling ban in the oil-rich eastern Gulf of Mexico, 125 miles from Florida beaches.

I think that the big oil companies need to put more money into clean alternatives. Wind power is so underutilized and cars that get SUPER high gas mileage have been on the drawing boards and have been produced for decades, but the oil companies put pressure to keep this development under wraps because they stand to lose $$$$. The transition is going to have to eventually take place and engineering students prove every year that it can be done. The profit margin will have to be removed as a stumbling block. I'm all for capitalism, but not when it involves risk-taking that destroys other economies. The big oil outfits had no plan for this type of catastrophe. The Gulf Coast region is going to feel the ramifications of this spill for awhile. Would you want to come vacation at our beaches?
