Most HE washers have this issue. They tell you to be certain to drain the water through the little drain hose and to leave the door open after washing clothes for a while so that it can air out. I use the machine cleaner from time to time. I've never found the precautions to be overly imposing.

I have a Maytag front loader And I haven't had problems. I keep the door ajar and I bleach our white clothes, so bleach runs through it on a regular basis.
