Default Craft Recipes

I'm not sure this is really the place, but Christmas is coming and not all our geese are getting fat. Sometimes I love to make some of the gifts I give and it's not too early to start. If you have "recipes" for hand-made goodies, perhaps you will share them with us here.

Lavender and Rosemary Soap Recipe

Lavender is known to soothe irritated skin; rosemary is said to revitalize the nervous system and ease stiff joints. This beginner's recipe for lavender and rosemary soap combines the healing effects of both. Use a square muffin tin as a mold or invest in soap molds (flowers, animals, etc., available at craft stores). And don't forget to make extra as gifts.

Ingredients

3 cups clear or white glycerin soap base*
¼ cup infusion of lavender flowers and rosemary leaves
1½ teaspoons of lavender oil
1½ teaspoons of rosemary oil
2 cups distilled water
soap molds (muffin tins, special soap mold, etc.)

Directions

Pulverize dried rosemary in a food processor, or buy readymade. (Rosemary is easy to grow!)

Make the infusion of lavender flower and rosemary leaves first. (Infusion basically means "to make tea.") Boil distilled water (non-chlorinated water is best) and pour hot water over fresh or dried herbs. Three tablespoons of herb per cup of water for ten minutes should suffice.

Add the lavender oil and rosemary oil to the infusion.

Melt soap base and add ¼ cup of infusion per 1 cup of soap base. Stir until blended, then pour into molds.

Let sit for a month so that mold is completely set.

*To achieve soap that is lavender colored, use "white" glycerin soap, rather than "clear." Then, before pouring into the mold, tint with "soap dyes" made especially for soap making, combining red and blue until desired lavender tint is achieved.

You might like to try experimenting with this “recipe.” Sometimes I add the oil and leaves at the same time to the water (in Step 2) before boiling. This would dilute the scent a bit. You can even try it without the oil for an even milder effect. When you make this soap for gifts, some of you friends might prefer the milder scent.

Default Chai Tea

There is a long standing belief that Chai tea is Ayurvedic. "Ayurvedic" translates into The life science. Ayu (life) Veda (knoweledge). Each of the spices in Chai tea mixes are believed to have healing potential. They promote everything from easing digestive issues, stimulating the senses and increasing your feeling of well being. Here is a recipe for Chai tea, you can play around with, changing the amount of spices you add so you can create your own blend.

The basics of Chai are all the same, you start with a few key ingredients.

Basic Chai Ingredients

2 cups water
2 cups milk
4 teaspoons loose tea, usually black tea but you can substitute your choice.
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
4 black pepper corns
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom, you can crush cardamom pods if they are available to you usually about 3 should cover it.

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan, heat over medium heat just until you start to break a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Strain the tea through a tea strainer and drink either hot or cold.

If you want to make up a chai mix as a gift. Replace the loose tea with an instant unsweetened black tea mix. Just package in cellophane bags or cute little glass jars, write up a tag and directions for a quick gift.

Default Spa Product Recipes I

TJsMom inspired me to go lookin' for these:

Aches & Itches Bath Salt Recipe

Ingredients

1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup dry milk
1 cup epsom salt
1 cup sea salt
Mix all ingredients together in a large ziploc bag or pretty jar.

Bath Salt Recipe

Materials:

Bottle or Jar
Epsom Salts
Food Coloring
Perfume or Essential Oil

Instructions:

Combine the desired amount of Epsom salts (enough to fit in your bottle or jar) with food coloring. Mix well so color is even. Add your purfume or essential oil and mix again. Spread the mixture out on a sheet of wax paper to dry for a couple of hours and then put it in the bottle or jar.

While the salts can be used right away, the purfume or esential oil will blend better with the salt if it is allowed to set in the jar for a few weeks.

Aromatherapy Bath Salts Recipe

Aromatherapy bath salts make a great gift, especially when you're on a tight budget. They’re easy to make, cost very little, and give your loved one a way to pamper themselves with a home spa experience. All it takes is two ingredients and a jar.

Here’s a good basic bath salts recipe.

* 3 cups Dead Sea salt, regular sea salt or Epsom salt (which you can get at any drug store). Sea salts typically come in several grain sizes. Combining grain sizes can make your salts visually appealing, but coarse grains do take longer to dissolve.

*25 drops lavender essential oil (available at health food stores). Lavender is known for its soothing, relaxing properties.

Directions:

To make: Place the salt into a bowl. Add the drops essential oils and mix well with a fork.

Place the salts in a pretty jar with a tight fitting lid to keep the oils intact. (Canning jars work beautifully.) After a day, you can mix well again to ensure that the oils have blended.

To use: Add 1/2 - 1 cup of the salts to warm bath water. Make sure the salts have dissolved well before getting into the bath

Body Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup oil. Sweet almond, grapeseed or rice bran oil are all good choices.

1 cup sea salt. You can also substitute sugar, which is gentler.

5 drops essential oils. The oil you choose for your body scrub depends on the result you want. Lavender is relaxing, lemongrass is refreshing and rosemary is stimulating.

Directions:

1. Combine the oil and salt in a bowl and mix well. Add essential oil and combine well.

2. To use, apply to dry skin using circular strokes to exfoliate the skin. Sit on the side of the tub to keep the scrub from making a mess. Don't use a salt scrub if you have any cuts in your skin.

3. Shower off or follow with a warm bath.

SIMPLE BUBBLE BATH

Ingredients:

2 cups soap flakes or grated soap
1 gallon water
1/4 - 1/2 cup glycerin
2 cups shampoo or liquid dishwashing detergent
Scented oil of your choice

Directions:

Mix the soap flakes, water and 2 tbsp glycerin in a pot and set over low heat, stirring occasionally until the soap has dissolved. (This liquid soap can be stored in a covered container and used as an all-purpose soap or hand soap in the kitchen.) In a bowl, add 2 cups of this mixture to the rest of the glycerin, shampoo and add a few drops of your scented oil. Put into a quart container and store covered at room temperature. When you're ready to bathe, add about one cup to your tub as it's filling.

Beat egg white until it is fluffy, add sour cream and grapfruit juice and blend well. Apply to face for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Soap Crayons

Ingredients:

1 c Soap flakes

Directions:

Have one large bowl and several small bowls, one for each color. You will also need an ice cube tray with different sections, or containers to act as small molds.

Put soap flakes in a large bowl and drop the hot water into the soap flakes, stirring constantly. The mixture will be extremely thick and hard to stir.

Spoon some of the soap into each of the small bowls and color each separately, adding the color by drops until the soap has the consistency of a very thick paste.

Press spoonfuls of the soap into your molds and set the crayons in a dry place to harden. They should take a few days to a week to dry completely.

When dry, remove from the molds and allow to dry for a few more days before using.

ROSEMARY-MINT FOOT SCRUB

Introduction

Rosemary Mint is a great all time essential oil blend for my feet and for my hands. It is wonderific!

Ingredients

2 cups White Sugar
1/4 cup Liquid Soap Base
3/4 cup Sunflower Oil
1 ml Peppermint Essential Oil
1 ml Spearmint Essential Oil
1/2 ml Rosemary Essential Oil
1/2 teaspoon crushed Grape Seeds or Raspberry Seeds

Makes about 20 fl oz.

Scented Bath Powder Recipe

Make your own Scented Dusting Powder!

Ingredients:

1 cup corn starch
1 tablespoon orrisroot powder
1/4 teaspoon essential oil

Directions:

Spoon the cornstarch and orrrisroot powder into a blender and run on low speed. Slowly add essential oil. That's it you are done...your own dusting powder! Apply with powder puff.

BODY GLITTER

Make your own body glitter using this simple recipe.

Ingredients:

Aloe Vera Gel
Glitter
Food Coloring (optional)
Small container (recycle old makeup containers or 35mm film containers, or look in stores that carry beads, crafts, or fishing tackle)

Instructions:

Fill your container about 3/4 full with the aloe vera gel. If you are using food coloring, mix a few drops at a time in with your gel until you get the desired color. Stir in a sprinkling of glitter at a time to avoid clumps. Add as much or as little glitter as you like.

You can try larger glitter and even small shapes such as stars; or, for a more shimmering look, use fine glitter.

Grapefruit Silky (Liquid) Soap

If you have empty pump dispensers in your house, you might want to try your hand at making silky soap. They take a minimum of effort and ingredients.

Ingredients:

1 cup unscented liquid soap
1/4 cup water
1 tsp salt
Grapefruit essential oil
2 T glycerin

Directions:

Combine all of the above ingredients. Add essential oil, drop by drop until the scent is to your liking.

The salt is a natural thickener so if your silky soap is too thin, add a little more salt as required.

Wow MagiePerdue! You really did some research!
I'm still in the process of hunting some of my old recipes. I used to go to craft stores and also try health food stores as well. You can sometimes score ingredients especially salts, oats and grains and fresh herbs in bulk at better prices than a grocery store. Sometimes, not always. I used to get my essential oils at both health food stores and in the Health & Beauty or the organic/health food sections of my local grocery.
Joann's has a lot of soap and candle items and if you get their coupons, you can save on stuff that way too.
