I grew up on a fruit farm in Michigan. During late June & early July,
we had to thin peaches so they had enough room to grow. Peaches
grow in tight clusters and if you don't 'thin' a few out of each cluster
while they are still small and green, there's not enough room for them
to grow into those large succulent ones you can get at Farmer's Markets, grocery stores, etc. The down side of thinning them is you're usually hot & sweaty and the peach fuzz sticks to your skin so you are itching the whole time you are working.
