BE A WINNER IN LIFE'S MARATHON!
Words of wisdom written by the founder of True experience, Bernarr Macfadden, in 1928
Ambition and aspiration are the drivers of life. Every man or woman of strong ambitions and high aspirations is engaged in a determined race for supremacy. He or she is struggling and fighting toward the top. Body and mind are driven to their utmost in this conflict for supremacy. Life is a battle in which only the strong may win first prize. Only those with sufficient strength and staying power can go on. These alone can hope to win.
Speed and staying power enable the racehorse to win the race. Speed and stamina enable the marathoner to lead the field. These are the qualities that enable man to win in all the contests of life. If strength and stamina are lacking, ambition only drives him to exhaustion. He flares up like a candle and then goes out. He drops behind in the contest and is lost in the crowd. No matter how great are your mental abilities, if you do not have the stay¬ing power you will not achieve the utmost of your possibilities. Some other man or woman, perhaps with less ability, but with more staying power, will carry off the prize.
You may win in the hundred-yard dash, but the race of life is a marathon. Rather, it is a cross country run—over hills and rough places. The race of life is over obstacles of various kinds and sizes. If you lack strength and staying power, you cannot win. We are all here to achieve the greatest things possible to us. Life does not seem to be purposeless. It seems to have an aim or an end. We owe it to ourselves to achieve our end. We owe it to ourselves to do the best that is in us.
We should start life with a determination to be just to ourselves. Thousands fail in life because they are not fair to themselves. They weaken their bodies and minds and lessen their staying powers by the abuses they repeatedly heap upon themselves.
Multitudes of superior minds are doing mediocre work because they do not have the strength and stamina to support them in greater work. They do not take proper care of their bodies. They heap abuses upon their bodies, habitually. They are their own enemies.
Their bad habits are weights with which they handicap themselves in the race of life.
A clear mind demands a healthy body and clean blood. Why not throw off the handicaps and surge ahead in the race? The race is to him who has intelligence enough not to handicap himself.
