Bone Marrow Donor Anyone??

I have just, at the ripe old age of 43, signed up to be a bone marrow donor. Has anyone else done this or been through the procedure. I'm very positive that this is the right thing to do (I've been thinking about it for years) but that doesn't stop me from being a little anxious about it. I have 4 children under the age of 12 and while my DH is on board he is not as enthusiastic as I had hoped. Am I crazy for signing up now? I can't imagine the pain of ever needing the services of such a registry, how could I not help if I can? I guess it's the procedure that scares me a little if I ever am called upon. But then again....I hope I am a match for someone!!

it is a brave move... I don't know what all is involved. Heck I'm all for,,, when I'm gone,, for the DR to take whatever will can be used for someone else......Heck I hope theree is something left of me to help another..

I am on the list and have been contacted once and said I would be willing. That was just the first step, they get a list of all who were a close match and found out who was still willing. Then they narrow the list down and if you are still in the top as a match they will contact you again. I was never recontacted, but I would do it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for your willingness to register, I am sure that all the people out there that need a match appreciate what you are willing to do for them.

I am registered and yes....if I could help save a life it is worth a little pain and discomfort.

Think about it.......you can help to save a life!!!!!!!!!!

i'm not signed up. but i never knew to sign up either. i will check it out. if i can save a life then i will definitely do it! i would want the same for me or my loved one.

I signed up after a thread was posted here where someone paid the fee that it cost to process your cells<I had to do a mouth swab>.

I signed up at dkmsamericas.org. They send a kit and you do a cheek swab to send back.

I'm not sure if it would be done the same way but 10 years or so ago I had a bone graft in my jaw bone and they got it from my hip.

My sentiments exactly! That's why I registered about 10 years ago, but I've never been asked to donate.

I truly feel the pain I may feel from being a donor is nothing compared to the pain someone would feel losing a loved one because I didn't donate. I know it's not for everyone and that's okay, but I also know that it is definitely right for me.
