Default Free software - Ubuntu - OS and apps

Apparently this is a free version of an OS. It has Open Office software and a few other goodies, but it apparently doesn't take up tons of memory. Other than than I know nothing about it.

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools. Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.
We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

I really enjoyed ubuntu BUT many things are not supported by the Linux OS. Most all Linux OS versions are free.

I had to switch back to Windows 7 which I am happy using.

DD is a self=proclaimed "Linux Snob". She does switch to Firefox on occasion.

SO is a confirmed Open Source afficianado. . .he took Word off my last computer and loaded the open source version (can't remember the name). . .I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, I guess. . .I never felt real comfy using it, but HE swears by it, as well as all other open source apps
