Question Seeking advice from parents with daughters

If you allowed your daughter(s) to get their ears pierced, at what age did you allow them to get it done?

My ten year old wants to get hers done and I think it might help her learn responsibility, but her dad doesn't agree with me. He thinks she is too young.

I think it really depends on her maturity level. Is she a responsible young lady? Does she take care of herself and would then take care of her ears? If so, then I think she's ready. Sure, she would need you help at first, but once they are healed, if she keeps earrings in them, she shouldn't have any problems. I would set limits as to what kind of earrings to wear and when ever possible point out in a non-judgmental way of course, women who have worn heavy earrings and what that has done to their lobes.

I think my SON was 15 before he got talked into shoving some kind of sharp instrument (an ice pick, perhaps??) through his ear. . .got it infected and wound up initiating a hospital visit and several hundred dollars worth of medical attention.

Perhaps you can avoid a similar fiasco for the moment, but I think it might eventually be much easier to have the ears pierced and just get her a small pair of flat faced studs (like the Disney princess or Dora ones) that won't get caught on her clothing or bedding, and teach her how to take care of her ears and her earrings.

I agree with Nan and Maggie. do set limits tho that if she wants to do anything else to her body (tatoos, more body piercings) that she will talk to you about it and not go behind your back to get it done.

I was kind of looking for the age that you allowed your daughter to get her ears pierced, but thanks anyways.

No age limit. Lots of parents have their baby's ears pierced.

Hmm...that's actually quite true, Nan.

Unfortunately, no one thought to pass around a rule book when it comes to raising kids (girls OR boys). . .ya just gotta do what you feel is right for your own child. Some "old souls" are intelligent, self-aware and empathetic at a very young age and some (like my 48 year old cousin) are kids, even after they are proven biologically to be adults. No hard and fast rules here, just do what you think your child is ready to handle.

With the approval of her pediatrician my daughter was 5 months and we never ever had a problem.

I was 10 and never had a problem.

I think 10 is a perfect age for your daughter
