During the summer, it can be a challenge to get my kids to clean their rooms.  I decided to make it a little more interesting by offering a prize to the kid who's room was the cleanest.  Of course, they wanted to know what the prize was upfront.

Realizing this was a make or break moment, I excitedly told them it was a "surprise prize."  Not falling for it, my 8-yr-old son said, "Hmff, it's probably just a kiss".  My 11-yr-old daughter chimed in, "I bet it's only a quarter."  Luckily, my 13-yr-old daughter said, "It's got to be something better than that.  I'm in."  Hearing that, the other 2 decided they weren't going to miss out and the competition began.

They cleaned under their beds, refolded everything in their dressers, sorted out toyboxes and even cleaned their closets.  I was shocked!  I hadn't expected this to work.  I didn't even have a prize in mind!  Now the pressure was on me to come up with something cool.  If it tanked, this tactic would never work again.

In the end, they each did such a good job, I told them they all won.  I asked them, "If you could choose the prize, what would it be?" The 2 younger ones said they would like to sleep on the air mattress in the tv room.  Done!  The older one wanted to choose what we had for dinner that night.  Done!  Rooms were clean, kids were happy with their prizes, I got off totally easy in the prize department and my son escaped without being tortured with a kiss!  It was a good day all around.
