When do you decorate for the holidays?

People in my neighborhood are putting up their holiday decorations earlier than usual this year. Is it because we really are coming out of the recession and they ready for the holidays? Or is it because one guy put up his lights on Thanksgiving Day and now everyone is trying to keep up with the Joneses? Have you put up your decorations yet? Are you planning to decorate more or less this year?

I had to recycle my artificial tree last year. It lasted many, many years and there was just no salvaging it. Maybe after I buy the new tree, I will feel like breaking out the decorations. Right not, I’m just not feeling up to it.

I always decorate over the Thanksgiving holiday for Christmas. Have for years & years & years (think that is enough years now). Happy Holiday everyone!

  • Darlene Taylor

My neighbors must have broken the early bird record! Right after Halloween! I was thinking maybe they work in retail! lol
Hey is there a way I can send you a gift of some samples of my product to try and blog about . Please let me know. Thanks Darlene

I start decorating on the 1st of December.

I don’t put up any Christmas decorations until after the Thanksgiving holiday. Always have done it that way. I want to be able to enjoy one holiday at a time. 🙂

    Happy Holidays!

We go to Lasalette Shrine to see the lights after Thanks Giving, but don’t do our decorations until about the second week of Dec.Happy Holidays!

My kids and I love to go see the lights that the Dept of Water & Power put up. They are beautiful and worth the wait. Unfortunately they were cancelled this year due to budget cuts. Maybe I can drive by your house to see the lights!

Most of my neighbors put up their Christmas decorations right alongside their fall decorations during Indian summer a couple of weeks ago. Not me! And after 5 house guests and a combined Thanksgiving dinner of 27 people at my sisters house–I need to take a deep breath(or several) before decorating for the holidays. 🙂

Hi Karen, tree’s not up just yet, but in a week or so I’ll get that done. Shopping is done and now time to enjoy what other people do over the Holiday. I love to see lights around our town and in the country where we live..
We wish you God’s Peace and a Very Merry Christmas. The Best is yet to come.

  • Love hearing from everyone! Happy holidays to you, too! @Darlene – Seriously? Xmas decorations right after Halloween? I can’t imagine! lol

  • Tom Bellamy

Mine have been up for a few weeks.

Hi Karen- We begin decorating the day after Thanksgiving. Or should I say my husband and kids decorate while I shop! We won’t get our tree until the second week of December though. We don’t enjoy a dried out tree on Christmas day, we we wait a little longer. I wanted to tell you thank you for your updates! I have ordered many gifts off the links you have provided and the items have begun arriving at my house. I am amazed at how much money I have saved and am so excited to give these gifts out. I have recommened your site to many people, including people I met waiting in long black friday lines. Hope your holidays are great!

I actually put my outdoor lights up since it was warmer this year and I hate doing it in the cold. I didn’t put my wreaths in my windows until the day after Thanksgiving. Then I turn my lights on. We had one turn their lights on the 2nd week in November! I hate that! LOL! Anyways, Happy Holidays!

As you know I recently moved to Florida from Massachusetts and a lot of people around me have lit up the outsides of their houses and have trees lit up inside. Yes, I would say that one person started it and everybody else is trying to keep up with the Joneses. Thanksgiving is barely over and at least up North you would not have seen houses decorated to the hilt this soon before Christmas. Yes, believe me people up not definitely decorate their homes to the hilt and I think a lot of that is one trying to outdo the last but the media does not help with keeping that tuned down either with plastering it all over the news which house looks like what and comparing them to each. The newspapers don’t help it either running contests for the “best” decorated house.

My birthday is December 7th and it has always been the tradition since I was born to put the tree up on my birthday (a real tree of course) and maybe some decorating outside but definitely not to the extent that you see houses decorated nowadays as you say with people trying to keep up with the Joneses and outdo everybody else.

No, I have not started decorating yet and to be honest with you I probably will not decorate as the long distance move took an awful lot out of me. I’m still asking myself if I have rocks in my head to do such a thing! lol

To be honest though, my husband lost his job about 7 years ago at Christmas time and unfortunately that took the joy out of the holiday for me and I have not as much as put up a tree since that year. I was hoping to restart the tradition again this year once we moved here but like I said, I’m beat from the move!

Happy Holidays everyone! The best to you and yours!

We always decorate for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving! Recession or not always puts a smile on my face 🙂

  • anna

I always wait after thanksgiving. It’s a tradition in my family. I love your bargains and this year i did very well. Thanks to you. May God bless you and your family

  • Renee

We always put up the outside decorations about the first week of December. This year we put them up the weekend before Thanksgiving because the weater was nice then. We also put them up early for our grandaughter who is 21 months. She just loves them. Next weekend we will put up the tree. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year.

  • Julie

Because of limited time issues, my husband and our next door neighbor put up lights a couple days or so before Thanksgiving but I got them to agree not to turn them on until after Thanksgiving. We already have to put up with the Christmas music played in the stores right after Halloween! I agree with the concept of celebrating one Holiday at a time.

    So, on that note…Merry Christmas!

Karen, Some people around us started decorating for Christmas the day after HALLOWEEN!!! It gets earlier every year! I don’t know about the economy, but I don’t believe it’s a case of keeping up with the neighbors. We usually put our tree up and decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, but my hubby fell at work about six weeks ago and has a broken kneecap, so we haven’t even begun to decorate at our house! We always decorate the outside of our house and put up Christmas inflatables but I think we’re going to have to go easy on it this year. The inside of the house may not be as festive as usual, either. But we will still put up one tree (instead of the usual two) and remember the Reason for the Season as we celebrate with our family!! Happy Holidays to you and yours!

In Wyoming we put up our decorations when we get a break from the snow, wind and below zero temps. This year we managed to get a few days after Thanksgiving, so we put up our decor early. Today it is snowing and blowing, so I am so thankful our lights are up now!

  • Patti Nowak

We weren’t going to put up any decorations this year as my husband has cancer and is going in for major surgery on December 9th but he decided he wanted them up! Bless his heart, as he got the tree up and some decorations outside. He felt the grandkids would enjoy the tree and I agree.

  • Craig

    Need… more… lights!!!

  • Ms. Tee

I’m with you Ruth B. My B-day is 12/15 and we get the tree up for my B-day. This is because my idea is to have all the shopping (as little as it is) done and under the tree by my B-day. After the 15th… is dedicated to helping those in my city needing help for the holidays. And tree comes down the 1st Saturday after New Years. Happy Holidays BB Friends….

  • Mrs. Legaspi

We usually get the lites & decor up the day after Thanksgiving.

I live in the Midest. My neighbors on my street all begin decorating for Christmas the Thanksgiving weekend. We are usually the last ones to decorate. My kids are the ones who say, why don’t we decorate our house like our neighbors? My neighbors probably say the same thing. I guess I like to keep things more simple.

  • Sandy

    Hi Karen,
our beautiful artificial tree went kaput last Christmas so we had to dig out our small fiber optic tree. its a very small table top tree. we will probably do the same this year. as for decorations. I just put the lighted candle type lights in the windows. a lighted wreath on the door and a angel in the front yard that lights up. I haven`t put any of it up yet though. hopefully in the next 2 weeks.

We are in the process of decorating now. We usually have it up by Thanksgiving, but we have some new decorations which we are adding on. We are doing a little more since our grandson is 6 and he is really into Christmas this year and helping decorate everything. Also my daughter and her husband are having another baby due in Jan. Merry Christmas to all.

  • Terry

We always begin decorating on the weekend after Thanksgiving. We probably would start on Friday but that being the busiest shopping day of the year and with so many bargains we can’t stay home to decorate. Our local library decorated and started playing Christmas music on November 15, before Thanksgiving Day. Fortunately for my wife and I, we are not affected by the recession and we don’t know personally anyone in our circle of friends, church or family unemployed or losing their homes.

  • Virginia Hamilton

I am not sure when I will decorate right now I just don’t have much of the Christmas mood.

  • Kimberly Wood

I have talked to many people and the reason they put their lights up early is because they want to do it beofre bad weather. Also some people have relatives for Thanksgiving or from the military which won’t be at their home for Christmas. I like to decorate right before Thanksgiving because I like to enjoy my decorations, but I also like to see my fall stuff and don’t want to put it away too early. I put my tree and decorations out on Sat. and will probably do more decorating when I do more cleaning after my finals. I am so glad that I am through almost another semester. Can’t wait until I am finished. Thanks for sharing your deals and for allowing us to comment as well. Happy Holidays!!!!

We go to my mom’s for Thanksgiving and it is a rule that while the people in the kitchen are cooking, everyone else is outside putting up the decorations. I used to put mine up on my eldests birthday in the 1st week of Dec but then my other child’s birthday was the middle of NOV. so we made it a ritual every year on her birthday we would put up all the lights.
